Bethany Ritter - USA

I believe that architecture and design is not something which can be simply bestowed, but something which, to produce true change and empowerment, has to be a collaborative and collective endeavour.

Bethany Ritter is an architect and urban planner with over 6 years experience. Holding a degree in Architecture, and having just completed her MSc in Building and Urban Design in Development from the Development Planning Unit at University College London, she is ready to take on the world. Building on an interest in post-disaster reconstruction, her focus and career has steadily moved from the typical architectural office to more innovative charities and foundations in which the topics of capacity building and a more participatory approach to design are explored and supported. Her fieldwork includes slum upgrading and inclusion in Bangkok, and integration of refugees in Brescia, Italy. After studying post-disaster reconstruction methodologies in New Orleans and Aceh, as well as the dynamics of spatial occupation, it was all but inevitable that she would end up working with and alongside Thinking Development in their quest to re-build lives in Haiti.
